Your What, Why & How

Sometimes you get desperate. I know. Sometimes I do too. But just a couple of words on this:

Please don't.

There's this torturous place between "I know what I need to be doing" and "I'm not doing what I need to be doing" that feels like... well... torture.

It makes me jumpy. It makes me a little impulsive. It makes me stop giving fucks about things and people that deserve to have fucks given about them. I usually get pretty bitter and cynical when I'm stationed here. This is a dark place. It's a place I'm never proud to be in.

Sound familiar?

What is it that brings us here? To this place of stickiness and stalling, this colorless concrete cell of a place?

I've been thinking about it all day, and I've come to an extremely uncomfortable conclusion:

It's ourselves. We got us here.

And really, let's not lie. Getting here is so. fucking. easy. Especially for creativesFor why?? because LISTEN: We are easily inspired. We're good at stirring the pot and starting awesome new shit.

But my friends, inspiration alone cannot get us to the finish line, and this is where we betray ourselves.

SABOTEUR.

This desperation is where we land when the inspiration peters out and we have to REALLY. DO.

So, as much as this is literally the last thing you want to hear right now, I need you to get up and keep going.

"BUT HOW," you sob as you fall from your knees to your face in the long, dark, storm-ridden back alley of your soul.

Like so:

Step one: remember WHAT you are working toward.

What's your definition of "done" in this situation?

Knowing what you're trying to accomplish is super important. Not only because, duh, you need a guiding light, but also because being clear on your goal lets you break it down into smaller, easily-achievable chunks.

We will examine this shortly.

Step two: remember WHY you're doing this.

What will it feel like when you reach your goal? What do you feel like you'll gain by getting to the finish line?

The Why might be one of the most important parts of this life sandwich that we find ourselves chewing on. Your Why is your reason for acting. It's your motivation to move forward. It's your answer to "oh my fucking fuck, how did I think this was a good idea??"

Step three: figure out the HOW.

You don't need to have your whole life figured out. You don't even need a 32-point plan to getting this one thing done. You just need to know what your next step is.

Take your What and look at how far you've come. How much progress have you made? And what would need to happen from here to finish it?

Now bring it down even further: what's one thing you can do to move ahead from here? One tiny thing is all it takes to get started again, even if it's just "I need to sharpen my pencil."

That whole one-step-at-a-time thing is the real deal, and every step you take brings you closer to achieving your goal.

So. I know you've been binge-watching old episodes of 30 Rock all day, but after reading this, you know:

  • What needs to happen
  • Why it should be happening at all
  • And how your going to make it happen.

That seems like a pretty effing good place to be in.

Now go. Do. I'm rootin' for ya.
